Something Old, Something New…

Something Borrowed, Something Blue…

OK, well I don’t have anything borrowed or blue, but for the new

I tried a KIND bar this morning…

I bought these a few weeks back but was trying to save them for Cooperstown… I didn’t get to try any of them out on our trip, so I thought now was a good time to do so… I had the Walnut & Date bar, which was only 150 calories, but full of yummy, crunchy walnuts… I was in heaven; however, it was just a tad bit sweet for me (but I’d still buy more) from all the raisins and dates (probably b/c I od’d on sugar this weekend)… The label lists that it is gluten/wheat/dairy/cholesterol free… and boasts all natural ingredients, which consist of:

  • Walnuts
  • Dates
  • Honey
  • Glucose
  • Raisins
  • Puffed Rice
  • Linseed
  • Chicory Fiber Soy Lecithin

Not to bad for a packaged bar; however, I wish it had slightly more fiber (3g) and protein (2g)…

After reading the ingredients,  I decided to google soy lecithin because I was unaware of what it really is… Seems like it’s a soy product but there are mixed reviews on whether it is good or not… That being said, I thought I’d ask you all about what kinds of things do you look for on labels when buying packaged products?  I typically just scan for HFCS, but are there other bad ingredients that I should be looking for?

On a side note, I do like that the KIND brand gives 5% of their profits to an organization OneVoice, “empowering moderates against extremism in the Middle East” (from the label)… It’s always nice to see companies giving back!

The bar held me over for a good three hours, I was shocked!!!

For the old…

I had “old faithful” for lunch… pb&j on a wheat english muffin… I swear I will be eating this for the rest of my life… I just am hooked… Plus, natural peanut butter is such a healthy food (in moderation) that there’s no need to stop eating it when you get out of middle school haha… On the side, I had two Clementine’s and a Dannon Light n Fit 0% strawberry banana yogurt… YUM… Finally, after eating this meal, I find my tummy + head returning to normal… Probably because my body is thanking me for eating healthy & nutritional foods today :)

Ok well back to work… today is luckily flying by before my very eyes, so no complaints from me!

  1. Heyy you! I love the Kind Bars too! But mostly I’ll take a half of one and cumble it up and warm it in the micro + put it on top of some froyo because they do nothing really filling wise! Though fats are said to “fill you up,” I eat Salmon and am STARVING (or at least I often feel that way) an hour or two later! W.E.I.R.D. BUT if you’re one who’s hunger is kept at bay with fats, then the KIND bars should be GREAT for you!

What I look for on a label: Typically, I look for HFCS and anything Partially Hydrogenated (Palm Oil, Cottonseed Oil, Corn Oil, etc.), as the hydrogen atoms are added to unsaturated oils, which, in turn, makes them the horrible trans fats! Mind you, FULLY hydrogenated oils actually do NOT contain trans fats, just the partially hydrogenated ones. The fully hydrogenated oils turn into Saturated fats, which are still bad ( as saturated fats=LDL=Bad Cholesterol= Increased risk of CHD) though. So yeah, I usually just look for this stuff, along with margarine (hard/sticks), vegetable shortenings, olestra (a non-fat potato chip ingredient that has properties that remove vitamins A, K, E, and D… Bc of this the companies usually fortify these products with the vitamins, but Olestra makes my stomach upset so I don’t go near the stuff if I can help it), umm I think that’s about it. Oh and I try to stay away from Corn Oil, Cottonseed Oil, Grapeseed Oil, just as a preference.

SUCH A BUMMER: I recently discovered the CURVES 100-calorie bars which are DELICIOUS! The chocolate-peanut-butter one is the only one I’ve tried, but they just came out with another one (maybe Rasberry Yogurt or something of the sort? Not sure.). Anyways they are 100-cals and contain a whopping 5 grams of fiber and 3.5 grams of fat. I like to eat foods that are high in both fiber and fat, if I can, just for the health benefits of eating unsat. fats, BUT I looked on the ingredient list yesterday when I was grocery shopping and they contain not ONE, but TWO types of Partially Hydrogenated Oils!! Is that ridiculous or what? On their website, they claim: “You’re all about getting healthy and staying healthy this time, true? Plan your foods right, and you’ll get more whole grains, fiber, vitamins and nutrients. All the stuff that’s in
Curves™ Cereal and Bars.” — They forgot to mention the two sources of trans fats… Hmm…

SOrry for the ranting! Oy, I need to get back to studying NOW! Enjoy the rest of your monday pretty lady! :)

  2. Can’t go wrong with an ol’ PBJ! :0)

When it comes to reading ingredients labels: my rule is that if I can’t pronounce it, don’t know what it is, and/or wouldn’t be able to find it in a wholesome, natural form (i.e. it wouldn’t be found in a laboratory), then I don’t eat it.

Good luck with the rest of work!

  3. I always see those KIND bars, but I have never tried one. Maybe I’ll give one a taste next time I see it.

  4. mm those Clementine’s just made me peel open an orange! happy monday :)

  5. Julz ~ What AWESOME tips!!!! I really appreciate this :) I cut and pasted your comment into a handy Word document, so that I can remember what to look for!!! I noticed that about the Curves bars actually a few weeks ago – what a misleading ad :( It’s a shame that some people aren’t educated and think they are eating healthy products when they really aren’t! Good luck w/ the studying & have a lovely day!

VeggieGirl ~ That is what I have been trying to focus on too… however I had a minor slip up with the chicory root—… I appreciate your great advice :)

Caroline ~ Yeah they were definitely impressive – I thought…

creatingadiva ~ hehe, hope you enjoyed it (and your Monday!)

  6. KIND bars make this MizFIt more hungry.

    *sigh*

Ill have em with something else….a chicken breast?

(they are IN A HURRY FOOD for me so I will drive thru somewhere and grab a grilled chicken and toss the bun)

    M.

    (Julz? you NAILED IT)

  7. MizFit ~ Hmmm, I’m curious to see how they hold me over when my eating habits are normal… I think I was partially still full yesterday from my weekend eating :( I am not the kind of person who gets filled up from fat, definitely need my fiber & grains, so I’ll definitely report back w/ round 2 soon!
