Cracked Wheat Goodness

May 14, 2008

Happy Wednesday!  Luckily, I have another sunshiny day on my hands and I’m definitely making sure I take advantage of the 78 degree weather that we are supposed to have today by going for a walk at lunch!  I almost contemplated going with cold cereal this morning since it was the first morning I didn’t wake up with a chill, but I was in the mood for something warm (surprised?)… Plus, I’ve been dying to try this new Hodgson Mill’s cracked Wheat cereal… After I bought it, I realized I should probably look up what cracked wheat really is and it appears, from my quick research, that it is cracked wheatberries… this is right down my alley since I’ve seen many bloggers (ie. Kath & others) have them for breakfast… I’ve only ever had them in salads, but I’ve loved them just the same!

The only downside was it took me about 4.5 minutes to cook a 1/4 cup serving in the microwave, but it was well worth the wait… The texture is similar to bulgur except I felt it was slightly more chewy and nutty flavored… the 5 g of protein & fiber doesn’t hurt either!  I added in a mini box of organic raisins, a couple of strawberries (I couldn’t resist!), a tbsp of sunflower seeds, a tsp of flax, and a spoonful of cinnamon raisin peanut butter… mmmm, mmmmm, mmmmmm good!

This is definitely up in the running as one of my favorite breakfast combinations!  Have a great day!

I’m pretty sure cracked wheat is bulgur. It’s not quite the same as whole wheatberries (think instant oats vs. steel cut) but I do love bulgur for it’s own properties!! Glad you liked it too :)

    Romina ~ they are yum!

Kath ~ I’m not sure… I found a few articles that state that cracked wheat is made from wheat berries: http://www.wholehealthmd.com/me2/dirmod.asp?sid=&nm=Reference+Library&type=AWHN_Foods&mod=Foods&mid=&id=137BB8FBD72644349AB896CA1DB7095B&tier=2
    Either way, it’s delicious! :D

Ah I am so jealous of the warm weather! We are having sunny weather but not nearly as warm. Your breakfast looks really hearty and delicious as always.
